အတၱသမာပဏီဓီ ( Self - control )

6.  To set oneself    in the right course.
To set oneself in the right way is to follow the right path. All living beings possess two basic powers - physical and mental powers concerned with survival and achievements in life. It is very important to use these powers in the right way. One should use them first to benefit himself and then to others.

For any kind of physical action (bodily or verbally), it is always initiated by a certain mental factor that may be vaguely conscious, fully conscious or premeditated.

Human actions are classified in three ways - physical, verbal and mental (kaya-kamma, vaci-kamma, mano-kamma). These actions may be good (Kusala), bad (Akusala) or indeterminate type (Avyarkata - neutral, neither Kusala nor Akusala). All actions lead to corresponding results as retribution (Vipaka) except the last one. Therefore, it is important that an action should be sinless, harmless and conducive, either to self or others. Abstention of evil ways or performing righteous deeds is the right course of action.

All sentient beings who are in the world of sensual pleasures (Karma bhumi - where human beings and deva celestial beings live)  defiling passions (Kilesas) of various kinds are abundant, that can lead one to bad actions in various ways. Ability to keep away from Kilesas is the right and noble way. Those who can eliminate some of them will become Noble Ones (Ariyas) and those who can eliminate all  will become Holy Ones (Arahants). Even if one cannot eliminate many, to have a control on them is the right way for an average person.

A person who can set himself in the right course of action in his life will live in noble way, free from problems of sins, and will enjoy the success and blessings of Kusala karma. Moreover, such person could be endowed with the spiritual virtues (Bhavana parami) from the past that is helpful in getting enlightenment for the liberation. He will live in peace of mind for his afterlife.
Therefore, to be able to set oneself in right course is blessing.
